MOXIBUSTION AT A GLANCE

Moxibustion is the burning of moxa, a cone of mugwart leaves near or over acupressure points and the body’s meridians. It is thought that the heat from the burning leaves effectively breaks up any blockages which improves the flow of Qi encouraging healing and balance.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Moxibustion has been used since Ancient China began practicing what we now refer to as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ancient practitioners often used Moxibustion concurrently with massage and acupuncture techniques in their efforts to bring healing and balance to their clients. As with many other traditional Chinese forms of medicine, Moxibustion has changed very little over the ages.

HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS

It is believed that by holding the burning cone close to the skin blockages in one’s meridians can be cleared. There are two commonly used practices. One involves lighting the cone and placing the wide end on the skin. The smoke travels down the cone and heats the skin. Once the skin turns slightly red the cone is removed and placed on the next trigger point along the meridian being worked on. The second method requires the cone to be held close to the skin but involves no contact. The smoke will heat the skin, once the area turns red the cone is removed.
Moxibustion is commonly used along with Acupuncture Therapy. The burning moxa cone is placed over the acupuncture needle which heats the needle, not only the skin surface. It is thought that this more deeply penetrates the Acupuncture points and may be more effective.

What to Expect During Your Visit

After your initial consultation the practitioner will begin each session with gentle palpitations. This is performed to find reactive areas as well as general muscle tightening. These are the ‘trigger points’ that will be the focus of your session. While trigger points are extremely common, every person will have trigger points, they will tell your practitioner where to work and focus your acupuncture session. They may work in that specific area and meridian as well as a referred median.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

No. Many individuals report a tingling sensation or maybe a slight initial pinch. The procedure as a whole is not painful so close your eyes, relax, and let your Acupuncturist take control.
