ACUPUNCTURE AT A GLANCE

Acupuncture uses hair-thin needles inserted along the body’s energy channels to restore balance and align one’s Qi, pronounced chee. Once these energy channels are cleared balance can be restored. This ancient medicine technique focuses on the body as a whole rather than individual symptoms.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Acupuncture dates back to recorded Chinese history from 6000BCE. Records have been found describing techniques using sharpened stones to treat everything from chronic illnesses to everyday discomforts. Acupuncture medicine has been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years and while today the techniques employed are slightly different the foundation has not wavered.

HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS

The body is made up of 12 very specific meridians, or channels. Each meridian follows tracks throughout the body and contains trigger points for specific organs and bodily functions. Needles are inserted into trigger points located along the meridian being targeted. By engaging the trigger points along a meridian, the body is better able to activate healing and be brought back to balance. Massage, herbal teas, dietary alterations, and heat therapy are often recommended to compliment acupuncture.

What to Expect During Your Visit

After your initial consultation the practitioner will begin each session with gentle palpitations. This is performed to find reactive areas as well as general muscle tightening. These are the ‘trigger points’ that will be the focus of your session. While trigger points are extremely common, every person will have trigger points, they will tell your practitioner where to work and focus your acupuncture session. They may work in that specific area and meridian as well as a referred median.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

No. Many individuals report a tingling sensation or maybe a slight initial pinch. The procedure as a whole is not painful so close your eyes, relax, and let your acupuncturist take control.
