A BRIEF HISTORY

Gua Sha massage is one of the oldest forms of massage. This modality dates back to the Paleolithic Age. What are now most commonly referred to as ‘Cavemen’ most likely utilized this technique to work on sore muscles and possibly to help alleviate symptoms related to various illnesses. Written records have been discovered from the Chinese detailing gua sha massage beginning in the mid 1300’s. Very little has changed about this modality and what we practice today closely resembles what would have been practiced by ancient Cavemen.  

HOW GUA SHA WORKS

Gua Sha massage stimulates blood flow and promotes the flooding of lymphatic fluid to the surface of the skin. Negative Qi in various forms are brought to the surface, forced out and replaced with fresh blood and healing lymphatic fluid.

After your initial consultation and discussing with your practitioner what you expect to receive from Gua Sha Massage a simple plan will be developed. Gua Sha Massage may feel similar to a more traditional hands-on massage however the pressure may be more intense as smaller areas will be worked on at a single time. You may feel a scraping sensation as the disk is pulled over your skin. Slight bruising is often experienced on areas that are focused on more intensely.
